What Does a Data Scientist Do???

In some cases, a Data Scientist may have a jobdesk equivalent to a Data Analyst, Machine Learning Engineer, or even a Data Engineer. Especially in startups or small companies, one person often has to wear many "hats" at once. But what is the actual jobdesk of a Data Scientist within a company?

The answer is not just building Machine Learning models. In fact, that is often only a small part of the overall work. A Data Scientist's main task is using data to help the company make better decisions.

This means that a Data Scientist does not only ask "Which model is the most accurate?", but also:

• What business problem is currently being faced?

• What data is needed to answer that problem?

• Is the available data sufficiently high quality?

• What analysis method is most appropriate?

• Is Machine Learning really needed, or is simple statistics enough?

• How can the analysis results be translated into recommendations that stakeholders can understand?

In other words, a Data Scientist acts as a bridge between data, technology, and business needs. They do not just produce numbers or models, but also ensure that the analysis results can have a real impact on the company.

Machine Learning is indeed one of the tools a Data Scientist has, but not the only one. In many projects, most of the time is actually spent understanding the business, cleaning data, performing exploration, and discussing with various parties before even a single line of a Machine Learning model is created.

A Data Scientist is not someone who is paid to build models. They are paid to solve problems using data. That is the essence of this profession, regardless of what title appears on their business card.
