You know detectives?

Detectives are good at guessing. From footprints and cookie crumbs, they can tell who took the cookie in the kitchen!

Well, a data scientist is like a detective too. But instead of looking for a cookie thief, they look for patterns from a whole lot of numbers.

For example:

• Why do people like to buy ice cream when the weather is hot?

• What video might you like to watch next?

• Will it rain tomorrow or not?

Data scientists collect numbers, then guess the answers. Cool, right?

But there’s a little secret...

Actually, this way of guessing has been used by people since ancient times, long before computers were invented!

It’s called statistics.

It’s the science of making smart guesses from numbers.

So a data scientist is actually like a statistician in disguise — wearing a cool new outfit (fancy computers!), but using the same old tricks in their brain.

Like a superhero wearing a new costume, but whose power still comes from the same old training.
